The Need for the Best Employment Websites in Nigeria
According to Vanguard Newspaper of April 26, 2017, the number of graduates mobilized for the annual National Youth Service Corp is no less than three hundred thousand.
While these graduates would wish for an instant employment after serving their country, the unemployment rate has been on a steady rise in Nigeria since 2016.
According to the National Bureau Of Statistics, the unemployment rate rose from 13.30% for quarter two (Q2) of 2016 to 18.80% for Quarter three (Q3) of 2017. The figures for underemployed Nigerians rose from 17.7 million for Quarter two (Q2) of 2017 to 18.0 million in Quarter three (Q3) of 2017.
In total, unemployment and underemployment rate was at 40.0% in Q3 of 2017 as against 37.2% in Q2 of the same year.
Although one might be tempted to fear, it is not all doom and gloom. The good news is people are still getting employed every day and you can just be one of those persons.
As at the time of writing, there are over fifteen job websites where Nigerians can get informed about the latest job vacancies. Honestly speaking, not all are efficient.
Some of those sites don’t have any job postings for close to a month. I won’t bother you with those here. You require timely information so you act within the time frame allocated for job applications.
In Nigeria, most jobs adverts last within two weeks to one month. However, you don’t have to wait until the application window is almost closed before you act.
Sometimes companies conduct job aptitude tests and interviews for applicants even before the closing date they stipulated.
So it is important to get connected to the best employment websites in Nigeria to enable you to act fast and get ahead.
The Best Employment Websites in Nigeria 2018.
These are the active employment websites we are going to examine:

Selection Criteria
Metrics employed for the examination are:
- Push Notifications: This is very important as it allows you to get instant notifications once a job advert goes live on their site.
- Social media presence: At the time of writing, not all versions of all the popular browsers we use support push notifications. While social media sites are used for connecting with friends and family, we can also utilize them for job hunting.
- Build, Upload, and Submit CV: You need a job site that can save your CV in their database so a click is all you need to apply for jobs. Another advantage is when the site allows you to update your CV or build one on their site before applying.
- Searchable Job Listings: There are different job openings posted on different job sites on daily basis. Imagine if your browser doesn’t support push notifications and you don’t expend time on social media like the average Nigerian. You sure deserve a way to explore the site in no time for jobs you might have missed. How to search for jobs on a site is critically important. The search system on the site must be user-friendly.
- Assistance and Career Resources: We want to check if some of these sites offer any help to job seekers apart from just posting recent job openings and saving up their CVs.
Push Notifications
Google Chrome android and desktop browsers fully support push notifications. So I had to open all the popular job sites in Nigeria and found the following providing push notifications:
- Hotnigerianjobs.com
- Joblistnigeria.com
- Jobgurus.com.ng
- Myjobmag.com
- Ngcareers.com
I allowed for push notification on all of those sites and checked back the following day and found out joblistnigeria.com, hotnigerianjobs.com, and jobgurus.com.ng sent me notifications.
As at noonday, I was yet to get any notification from others.
One thing to note is that all the notifications sent were for different job adverts. I can’t say if it is the rule so the loveliest piece of advice is for you to allow for push notification wherever you find it to maximize your chances.
Social Media Presence
JOB SITE | NUMBER OF TWITTER FOLLOWERS | NUMBER OF FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS | LATEST TWITTER POST | LATEST FACEBOOK POST | NUMBER OF LATEST POST FOR TWITTER | NUMBER OF LATEST POST FOR FACEBOOK |
Joblistnigeria.com | 633 | 212K | Oct 9,2011
Hotnigerianjobs.com | ≈ 12K | 64 | August 25, 2018 | , December 12, 2017
Myjobmag.com | ≈ 9K | 21K | March 08, 2018 | August 25, 2018 | 1
Jobberman.com | ≈ 57K | 304K | August 27, 2018 | August 08, 2018 | 1
Jobzilla.com | ≈ 3K | 58K | August 27, 2018 | August 26, 2018 | 3 | 9 |
Jobgurus.com | ≈ 16K | 54K | August 27, 2018 | August 08, 2018 | 14
Ngcareers.com | ≈ 22K | 65K | August 27, 2018 | August 24, 2018 | 4 | 1 |
Careers24.com | ≈ 14K | 47K | August 24, 2018 | August 24, 2018 | 2 | 1 |
I captured the above report on August 27, 2018, at around 9:20 AM. I didn’t bother with some other sites as they are far behind.
You can see from the report that having more followers doesn’t mean you are better than the other.
If you love Twitter, follow jobgurus.com for job updates. You should follow jobzilla.com to get updates on recent job posts. It is not a terrible idea to follow jobzilla.com on Twitter, too.
Build, Upload and Submit Your CV
Jobgurus.com allows you to upload your CV. In fact, that is the first thing you encounter once you are on their website. They claim recruiters prefer conducting a search on their CV database than posting a job ad.
Apart from jobzilla.com, other job sites allow you to build your CV or profile or upload one.
Myjobmag.com allows you to build more than one CV for diverse roles. To me that is awesome. You don’t need one CV for every job application. It no longer works that way. If you have experience in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, you can build different CVs so you apply with the one that best suits the job advertised.
Searchable Job Listings
All the job sites mentioned do have a search query to enable you to search for specific jobs or jobs within a particular place.
However, the site that went further than the norm is jobberman.com. Jobberman.com allows you to search for jobs even by salary range.
Assistance and Career Resources
Do you want to know the 10 things recruiters don’t want to see in your CV? If yes, head to ngcareers.com resources section and read for yourself. Ngcareers.com run a blog with valuable tips on how to get past others in the job market. Jobberman.com and careers24.com.ng provide a section for career advice if you are in doubt. Jobgurus.com.ng includes a section for downloadable aptitude test practice eBooks. The eBooks cost around #2000. If that price is too much you can use their aptitude test practice program for free.
Conclusion: Which is the Best Employment Website in Nigeria 2018?
From the few important metrics, you need to use more than one job site if you want to get a job fast in Nigeria.
Use push notifications where possible, stay in touch on social media, practice your skills on how to take aptitude tests on jobgurus.com.ng, build more than one CV on myjobmag.com, and go deeper in your job search with jobberman.com.
